IREX THEORY
IREX theory training is conducted as either full or part-time to suit client requirements. Training is
conducted by current IFR pilots with extensive airline, charter and instructional backgrounds.
The Instrument Rating Examination (IREX) is a CASA open book, three and one half hour cyber examination
which consisting of 40 questions. The pass mark is 70%. (28 correct answers). The following subjects are covered:
- Meteorology
- Flight Rules and Air Law
- Navigation
- Operations Performance and Planning
- Human Factors
- Trial Exams and Revision
The IREX is a computer based examination based on the operation of a twin engine aeroplane. Thus our course is suitable for both aeroplane and helicopter pilots.
Required Equipment/Documentation:
- Navigation Computer
- Multi Scale Ruler
- Protractor
- Non-Programmable Calculator
- Tags
- Highlighter
- Pens/Pencils
- ERSA
- AIP (or a Jeppesen chart set)
- DAPS East and West (or a Jeppesen chart set)
- Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR's)
- En Route Charts Low 1-8
- Terminal Area Charts 1-5
- PCA chart.
You do not need to bring the Civil Aviation Orders - we will advise you which sections are required and these can be downloaded
from the Internet. Jeppesen is not recommended for IREX theory exams however it is possible to use them in the exam.
A pass in the IREX examination is necessary before you commence practical IR flight training. It is recommended all
IREX graduates continue onto the flight line for CIR training, while the IREX study material is still current and
familiar. This will make your flying phase much easier and ensures you finish within the scheduled hours -
this may save you repeating sorties.
